Share of U.S. consumers that own a home fitness product 2021, by product category

According to Statista's Global Consumer Survey, about three in 10 consumers in the United States had either weights or dumbbells at home in 2021, making them some of the most commonly owned home fitness products in American households. Many U.S. consumers also owned (yoga) mats and treadmills. Just under 80 percent of survey respondents owned at least one fitness product.

What shoppers look for in sporting goods

When buying sports gear, such as fitness equipment, sportswear, or shoes, shoppers in the United States typically kept a number of things in mind. First and foremost, most U.S. consumers found it important to choose sporting goods that are comfortable and of high quality. Surprisingly, only around a third found a low-price tag a very important factor. Furthermore, an increasing number of consumers also found sustainable production and the use of vegan materials crucial considerations, given today’s climate.

Gyms and fitness clubs

Although some Americans prefer to exercise outside or at home, a considerable share of people likes going to the gym, which usually provides members with a vast array of exercise equipment and other benefits. Accounting for a total of nearly 40 million across the country in 2019, the majority of Americans hitting the gym were people between the ages of 18 and 54. As of July 2021, there were some 32 thousand health clubs and fitness facilities in the United States, which is a sharp decline compared to previous years, likely due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
