Gas flaring is a routine element of oil and gas extraction and is used primarily as a safety measure to remove highly combustible gases. The upstream industry has been advised to reduce flaring as much as possible, however, in order to lower greenhouse gas emissions and preserve valuable gases. In 2018, an estimated 1.2 million metric tons of gases were flared on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf.
