Key biodiversity areas in Africa 2010-2020

In 2020, key biodiversity areas in Sub-Saharan Africa witnessed a slight increase in landmass from 2010, as it covered 41 percent of the total land area. On the other hand, biodiversity areas decreased dramatically in North Africa, sinking from 22 percent in 2010 to 3.4 percent in 2020.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s ‘Global Standard for the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas’ (2016) sets out globally agreed criteria for the identification of key biodiversity areas worldwide, defining them as “sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.”
