The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s ‘Global Standard for the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas’ (2016) sets out globally agreed criteria for the identification of key biodiversity areas worldwide, defining them as “sites contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.”
