Freedom of expression score in The Gambia 2000-2023
In 2023, The Gambia scored 74 points in the Global Expression Report (GxR). This was higher compared to the previous year, when the country scored 72 points. Over the observed period, the country's score rose considerably in 2017 from 11 points to 69 points. This was after the current President Adama Barrow was able to win in the election against Yahya Jammeh and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) put together a military coalition to remove the latter, after refusing to leave office. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
