Unemployment insurance funds (arbetslöshetskassa or a-kassa in Swedish) are economic associations tied to trade unions and since 2002 they are to some extend equal to a government agencies. The primary function of unemployment funds is to administrate and pay unemployment benefits. The membership in an unemployment fund is a voluntary income-related insurance and all members are obliged to pay a monthly fee.
