Fonterra is New Zealand’s largest dairy cooperative and boasts some impressive figures. It is owned by 10,500 Kiwi farmers and is responsible for around 25 percent of New Zealand’s exports. In New Zealand, brands produced by the co-op include Anchor (milk), Mainland (cheese and butter), and Fresh 'n Fruity (yogurt). One of the largest producers of cow milk worldwide, Fonterra plays a significant role in the global context. The company exports 95 percent of their local production to around 140 countries worldwide. As fresh milk is perishable, exports are mainly in the form of milk powders.

Fonterra is the most dominant dairy company in New Zealand, and one of the leading dairy companies worldwide. Other major global dairy exporters, such as Dairy Farmers of America and Lactalis, are the co-op’s biggest competitors. Fonterra’s main competitors in New Zealand are Open Country Dairy Limited and Synlait Milk Limited. With Fonterra turning a significant a profit recently, the co-op has solidified it's dominance in the dairy sector both locally and globally.
