Aluminum imports to Europe by country 2021
European aluminum production
Production of primary aluminum in Europe amounted to just above 8 million metric tons in 2021, a volume which had been nearly stable since 2017, despite the decrease in metal demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Russia and Norway were the leading European producers of the alloy, with Russia’s production volume reaching over three million and dwarfing all other countries in the region. Russia-based Rusal ranked third in the leading primary aluminum producing company worldwide based on production output, surpassed only by the China-based Chinalco and Hongqiao Group.
European aluminum trade
Russia was the leading aluminum exporter in 2021, exporting around 3.5 million metric tons of aluminum, significantly more than its imports that year. It was closely followed by the Netherlands and Norway, which both exported more aluminum than they bought from other countries. Germany was the main aluminum consumer in Europe, in part due to the metal’s popular use in the transportation industry.
