On January 1, 2020, the International Maritime Organization's new sulfur cap came into force. Globally, ships will be allowed to use fuel types with a sulfur content of under 0.5 percent. Higher concentrations will be allowed only if scrubbers are installed. Certain areas, such as the EU and California, are subject to more stringent standards.
