Length of hospitalizations in psychiatric services in Belgium, by region 2000-2016
Although Belgium reformed mental health services so patients could be treated as closely as possible to their living environment, the number of psychiatric hospitalizations increased in the country. Indeed, the number of admissions per thousand inhabitants rose from 305 in 2000 to 351 in 2016. From a regional perspective, psychiatric hospitalizations went up by roughly 20 percent in Flanders. While such hospitalization increased moderately in Wallonia, the number of admissions per thousand inhabitants decreased in the Brussels-Capital Region.
