The pandemic caused inventory distortions in the grocery and mass-market retail. While some product categories were extremely sought after, other consumer goods were less in demand. In 2020, the imbalance between supply and consumer demand produced a total out-of-stock value of 176.7 billion U.S. dollars. Conversely, the value of consumer goods going out-of-stock amounted to 568.7 billion U.S. dollars.
