Degree of internet freedom in India 2016-2023
In 2023, India's score on internet freedom improved slightly from 51 in 2021 to 50 in 2022, indicating a "partly free" internet. Scores showed a declining trend since 2017. Evidence showed that apart from programs to expand internet infrastructure, the Modi-led BJP government continued to impose internet shutdowns, ordered the blocking of websites and content removal from social media, as well as harassed journalists and marginalized communities. This reflected online, and was despite the constitution guaranteeing freedoms of expression and religion.
