Preferred beverage for Japanese sweets in Japan 2024
Green tea variations were the most popular drink to pair with Japanese-style confectioneries, as revealed in a survey conducted in January 2024 in Japan. Over 62 percent of respondents named green tea their preferred beverage to drink when eating Japanese sweets. Powdered green tea (matcha) which is also served with traditional sweets (wagashi) in Japanese tea ceremonies was named by almost 22 percent of respondents.
Japanese-style sweets refer to a broader category of confections that may also use ingredients not commonly found in wagashi like dairy products. It commonly takes inspiration from Western confections like whipped cream dorayaki, chocolate-filled daifuku, and matcha cheesecake.
