Petrol station owner type numbers in the United Kingdom (UK) 2000-2023
Dealers owned petrol stations have by far the largest number of operational sites, with 5,322 open sites as of 2023. Nonetheless, total number of petrol station sites declined since 2000 by around a third. The number of petrol stations owned by hypermarkets grew, but continued to hold the smallest share of petrol station sites up until 2015, when a sharp reduction in the number of companies owning sites moved them to second in the list up until 2023 when they became third.
Despite the low number of petrol stations owned by hypermarkets, the volume of motor fuel sold in the United Kingdom by these sites was by far higher compared to the other ownership petrol stations. In 2023, hypermarkets sold 10,692 kiloliters of motor fuel annually, while dealer sites sold an average 2,651 kiloliter per annum.
