According to a study examining the share of weekly time spent with certain music sources, consumers in the United States spent approximately 36 percent of their time listening to audio on the radio in 2023, compared to just 39 percent of weekly time spent two years earlier. The last few years have been turbulent for the music industry as major shifts have taken place. Streaming has largely taken over from physical formats, and the total number of on-demand audio and video streams in the United States amounted to an enormous 1.15 trillion in 2019. Meanwhile, the retail value of physical CD shipments has fallen dramatically, and subscription audio streams account for the largest share of recorded music industry revenue worldwide.
