Most-viewed movies in Norway 2023, by number of movie tickets sold
In 2023, "Barbie" was the most-viewed film in Norwegian movie theaters, selling more than 662 thousand tickets. "Oppenheimer" followed with attendance of nearly 520 thousand and "Super Mario Bros." movie closed the top three with over 421 thousand tickets sold that year.
The Norwegian cinema market
In recent years, the gross box office revenue in Norway generally increased and reached roughly 1.3 billion Norwegian kroner in 2019. However, due to the closures of movie theaters after the coronavirus outbreak, the revenue considerably declined to 558 million kroner in 2020. As of 2021, the revenue started to recover from the pandemic, increasing its value to nearly 680 million kroner that year. As of 2022, the largest Norwegian cinema was by far Nordisk Film Kino in Oslo, with a revenue of roughly 152 million Norwegian kroner. In general, Nordisk Film Kino, as well as Bergen Kino are the most valuable cinemas in Norway.
Film distributors for Norwegian cinemas
Based on the revenue, SF Norge is one of the leading movie distributors in Norway. In 2020, the company generated ticket revenues of roughly 156 million Norwegian kroner and thus, ranked first. The second largest film distributor in the country was Nordisk Film Distribusjon, with a box office of about 120 million Norwegian kroner.
