A2A payments adoption in POS or e-commerce worldwide 2022, by region
A2A apps were a more popular payment method for consumers in Latin America than in other parts of the world in late 2022. This is according to a consumer survey held in August and September 2022, asking for different kinds of payment methods. A2A or account-to-account payments refers to direct payments from one party to the other without the need for an intermediary. Such intermediaries are card rails from the likes of Visa and Mastercard. An important example of an A2A application in Latin America is Brazil's Pix – an app developed by the country's central bank and one of the world's main brands using real-time payments technology. It should be noted that sources sometimes interpret A2A n different ways, as bank transfers (push requests) and direct debit (pull requests) can technically be a part of A2A as well. These transactions take place on a bank rail, without the need for a card intermediary. The source behind the market share of A2A payments in Latin America, for example, calculated its latest figures by combining bank transfers and direct debit figures together.
